Looking for an indepth review of Hennessy Hammocks? In this article I walk you through our honest opinion of this brand.

Whenever we get the opportunity, Tom and I are always down for some camping. We love spending time outdoors and would jump at the chance to do so every time. Unfortunately, since we travel with our entire life in our backbacks, carrying a tent with us isn’t an option.

We often find ourselves in secluded beaches or lush jungles giving ourselves a mental spanking for not having a tent with us. This is when Hennessy Hammocks came in the picture.

Hennessy Hammock is a brand dedicated to helping people enjoy their time outdoors. We first heard of Hennessy when we asked our good friend if carrying tents around South America would be a good idea. He quickly said, if you really want to camp, you’re better off carrying Hennessy Hammocks!

BOOM.

We started looking into what it could do and started reading other reviews. Soon, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on them! The owner, Tom Hennessy seems to be our kind of guy. He designed these hammocks while considering what every traveller would need.

Now I’ve had hammocks before, but none as heavy duty and well designed as this. Upon reading about him and his adventures, we’re convinced he’s an ace guy. I mean, if getting picked up by a tornado while in your hammock doesn’t make you cool, I don’t know what will.

Hennessy Hammock Features

Heavy Duty

Now we’re not going to lie. These bad boys are pretty heavy duty. Made from quality material that will withstand various weather conditions. Although we probably wouldn’t try sleeping on them during Winter time, we’ve read reviews of people who have. With additional insulation, hennesy hammocks can last you a while.

Mosquito Netting

As we are commonly eaten alive by mosquitos, having this feature built into their standard hammocks are amazing! Apart from providing some much needed ventilation, it also protects you from pesky insects! hennessy hammocks backpackers

Weight

Although we know it’s not the lightest hammock out there, the sheer durability alone convinced us to carry them with us during our yearlong expedition to South America. As we chose the lightest weight hammocks designed for backpackers (Ultralite Backpacker Asym Classic), this hammock, including all its parts comes in a little over 1kg.

Good enough for us! As Tom is a little bit taller compared to me, he got the Explorer Ultralite Asym Zip Comfort which is made to accommodate taller and heavier people. You can check the complete specs of the Explorer Ultralite Asym Zip here.

As I have severe back problems, comfort is quite a big thing when it comes to sleeping. After a few hours of trying out our Hennessy hammocks, we began questioning ourselves about why we had never used them before. They would have come in handy when we were sleeping on the floor, when we went jungle trekking in Sumatra or even when we decided to stay with a fisherman and his family in the Philippines.

Our point is, these hammocks are comfortable. Because of their asymmetrical shape, you don’t get the feeling of being squished in.

The only downfall of this hammock is its difficulty to set up.  Now I won’t say I am the best person for this as I have very little patience for reading manuals and setting things up. Although we know it will just take some time, before long we will soon be able to set these up without any hitches.

In regards to the rainfly, you just have to experiment a little to find the perfect position to maximize ventilation and coverage. hennessy hammocks

Our Verdict of the Hennessy Hammocks:

Hennessy hammocks are the perfect companion for us backpackers. They are light enough to carry in our backpacks but heavy duty enough to survive our extreme terrain. We are excited to use them when we’re in Amazon Jungle or some other far flung exotic destination.

For now, we will settle using them at the beach break where we surf here in Ecuador. Perfect for some much needed down time in between swells and work. Our hammocks, a beer, and the ocean…now that’s a pretty hard combination to top!
